Kristin simply loves to read.According to our source CBC Books Kristin mentioned 5 books that have helped shaped her life.

The book that got her through a difficult time

Geek Love by Katherine Dunn

“I read Katherine Dunn’s Geek Love at a time when I felt particularly isolated and strange. It was perfect. Geek Love
is a celebration of those aspects of our personalities that are
bizarre, strange and out of the ordinary. It is also a story of family –
albeit a family of genetically warped circus geeks — and all the
wonderful and twisted aspects of that.” states Kristin

The first book she remembers reading

Anne of Green Gables by
L.M. Montgomery

“The first book that I actually remember reading was Anne of Green Gables
How very Canadian of me. Obviously I remember reading books prior to
that, but this was the first time I was pulled deeply into another world
and profoundly affected by a character. Anne Shirley was not only who I
wanted to be — a fiercely independent girl filled with writerly
impulses — she also spoke to the ways in which I felt like an outsider,
and gave some shape to my nostalgia and joy and sadness. Every journal
from that time is steeped in Anne Shirley.

The book she recommends to friends

Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson

“Lately it has to be Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson. This
novel is written with such consideration and wisdom. Each word is filled with layers of meaning and beauty. It is a book that I want to chew on.The way Ms. Robinson writes of the permanence of loss and the impermanence of life and relationships speaks right to my heart. So I decided that everyone would feel the same way. Ha.”

The book that made her a poetry fan

Coney Island of the Mind by Lawrence Ferlinghetti

“A Coney Island of the Mind by Lawrence Ferlinghetti was my first poetry collection. And I just loved it. This book propelled me into poetry. I loved the rhythm of the language, the feeling he conjured of a place and time, his humour and his politics. His words made me feel
lifted and potent. I am endlessly grateful to Ferlinghetti for opening the door into this world.”

The book that took her a long time to come around to – but she’s happy she finally did..

Palestine by Joe Sacco

“More than a book, an entire genre; I had avoided comic books and graphic
novels my entire reading career. A person very dear to me successfully
lured me into the comic world with Joe Sacco’s Palestine. I tore
through the book and proceeded to build a mini collection of graphic
novels. This form is cinematic, intimate and infinitely creative”

Marvel announces new wave of female-lead titles !!

Marvel Comics

It’s a good day to be a comics fan, especially if you’re a woman. Big hitters Marvel and DC both chose Friday to make major announcements about their comic book lines.

Marvel seemed to be edging ahead in the social media love-in after unveiling an all-female Avengers team. There was no sign of Captain America, Iron Man or Hulk, but instead a host of Marvel’s female heroes in a team to be introduced as part of its cross-title Secret Wars event in May.

The line-up looks like it features pretty much all of Marvel’s super-women – front and centre are She-Hulk (the green guy’s cousin), Medusa, one of the Inhuman clan with “living” hair, Jubilee and
Storm, of the X-Men, and veteran avenger: the Wasp.

Also featured are Captain Marvel, Black Widow, Spider-Woman and Moondragon – who, despite this new age of female empowerment at Marvel comics, doesn’t appear to have lost her revealing green costume.

What these movies have in common — besides great casts and impressive cinematography — is the fact that they are all based on books.

Every year, movies are created out of books, a change from one type of storytelling to another that expands the shelf life of the written account even as it opens a tale to a whole new audience.

As with last year, 2015 will see many bestsellers move from page to screen, and for your edification, gentle reader, here’s a list of such transformations:

Silence by Shusaku Endo

Japanese author Shusaku Endo’s spiritual meditation about a Jesuit missionary in 17th century Japan will become a movie directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver and
Tadanobu Asano. Two young Jesuits (Garfield and Driver) arrive in Japan where they witness the torture and death of those willing to stand up for their faith.

The Revenant by Michael Punke

Michael Punke’s novel is a thrilling frontier yarn about the American wilderness, based on the real life of fur trapper Hugh Glass. Glass was mauled by a bear and left for dead in 1823, abandoned (and robbed) by
two fellow employees of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company. Imagine their surprise when he survived. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu directs Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will Poulter and Domhnall Gleeson in the
much-anticipated film version. It opens Christmas Day.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies! by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith

Based on Seth Grahame-Smith’s hilarious novel, this reworking of Jane Austen’s tale of love and social climbing in the 19th century gets a shot in the narrative arm from the presence of the undead. Just go with
it. Starring Lily James, Lena Headey, Sam Riley (as Mr. Darcy) and Douglas Booth.

In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick

A rogue whale preys upon a ship in this thrilling film version of Nathaniel Philbrick’s In The Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex. Chris Hemsworth, Brendan Gleeson and Cillian Murphy star in this real life survival tale of 19th century sailors forced to live by their wits (and a bit of cannibalism) while stranded 90 days at sea. It opens Dec.11.

Dark Places by Gillian Flynn

Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl was a huge hit in 2014, and fans can look forward to the film version of her book Dark Places, a gothic mystery about poverty, family and the “satanic cult” hysteria of the 1980s. A child who was the lone survivor of a mass murder is approached 25 years later to reconsider what she saw — if the real killers are ever going to be found. With Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Chloe Grace Moretz and
Tye Sheridan.

Sylvia Day`s Crossfire Series to be adapted for Television !!

Sylvia Day vows to protect her fans’ favourite moments when her “Crossfire” erotic romance novels are adapted for television. The bestselling author of the books following the romance of billionaire Gideon Cross and Eva Trammell is an executive consultant on the TV series optioned by Lionsgate Television.
She says she’s in frequent contact with producers and will be on the set for filming, adding, “It’s like I’m the readers’ voice” as the books are transformed for television. “I’ll review scripts and remind them of things that I know as the writer, being very well connected to the fandom of this series, of iconic things: clothing, lines of dialogue, locations, things that they couldn’t change because readers would immediately revolt,” she says. “Captivated by You,” the fourth novel in the series, was recently released. Day says Lionsgate has a director and a showrunner for “Crossfire,” which she anticipates will premiere next year.
“The producers feel that it will take an entire season to explore one of the ‘Crossfire’ novels,” she says. Producers want to air the series on a premium cable network or a subscriber service like Netflix or Amazon Instant Video, which Day says would be perfect for the sexually explicit romance. “Of course it’s going to be an erotic story,” says Day. “Does that mean it’s going to be super graphic? I doubt it’s going to be any more graphic than what you see on ‘Game of Thrones.’”
